How to Properly Season a Wok

Seasoning a wok is a crucial step in making sure your stir-fry dishes turn out flavorful and delicious. A well-seasoned wok not only prevents food from sticking but also imparts a unique taste to your dishes. If you’ve recently purchased a new wok or your old wok needs a refresh, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly season it.

Step 1: Wash and Dry the Wok

Before you begin the seasoning process, make sure to thoroughly wash the wok with warm, soapy water. Use a brush or scrubbing pad to remove any manufacturing residues or oils. Rinse the wok thoroughly and dry it completely with a towel.

Step 2: Heat the Wok

Place the clean and dry wok on the stove over medium heat. Allow the wok to heat up for a few minutes until it is hot to the touch. This step helps to open up the pores of the metal and prepare it for seasoning.

Step 3: Add Oil

Once the wok is hot, add a small amount of high-smoke-point oil such as peanut, canola, or vegetable oil. Use a paper towel or brush to coat the entire surface of the wok, including the sides. Make sure to use a heat-resistant utensil to avoid burns.

Step 4: Burn off Excess Oil
